YESCO Completes LED Retrofit of Stanford's Adverb Wall Installation

2026-10-28 · via DailyDOOH

YESCO has completed a lighting and display refresh of the Adverb Wall at Stanford's Graduate School of Business, a permanent installation the company originally built in 2012 with artist Peter Wegner. The work matters to anyone who maintains large-scale illuminated displays: it is a rare public example of a sign and display company documenting a full relamping and rewiring of a complex installation more than a decade after handoff, and what that scope of work actually involves.

According to the announcement, the project included removing the existing internal lighting and replacing it with new LED lighting and power supplies, refreshing vinyl on select words, and securing internal wiring to stop shadows or visual obstructions from forming. YESCO also reassembled and secured the display after the upgrade.

The installation, titled "Monument to Change as a Verb," sits at the Knight Management Center and measures 14 feet by 18 feet. It uses 308 individual adverbs that can illuminate on their own or in groups, built on what YESCO describes as a highly customized internal grid system. The original control system was designed with more than 80 programmed scenes and sequences, with randomized sequencing meant to keep the viewing experience changing over time, according to the company.

Jeff Young, YESCO's chief revenue officer, said the company's role does not end when an installation is complete, and that maintaining and updating complex art displays keeps the original artistic intent relevant for new audiences.

What this signals for operators

The announcement does not disclose project cost, timeline, or whether the control system itself was replaced or just the lighting and power supplies feeding it. It also does not say whether the vinyl refresh affected all 308 words or only some, and it does not specify the LED fixture type or supplier used in the retrofit.

For digital signage and permanent display operators, the case is a reminder that architectural and fine-art installations built around custom lighting grids carry the same lifecycle problems as any commercial display: lamps and power supplies degrade, wiring shifts, and after a decade or more the original build team is often the only one who fully understands the internal grid logic. YESCO positions this as a maintenance and refresh service offering rather than a new product, which places it alongside other sign companies that have moved into long-term servicing contracts for the large-format and specialty displays they originally fabricated.

The release gives no indication of ongoing maintenance terms or whether YESCO will return for further updates, so it is unclear if this was a one-time refresh or the start of a recurring service arrangement.

Stanford’s Adverb Wall Gets YESCO Makeover

YESCO , the 106-year-old company known for creating, repairing and maintaining internationally recognizable signs, has announced the completion of a comprehensive refresh of Stanford University’s distinctive Adverb Wall, a permanent art installation located at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

More than 14 years after YESCO originally constructed the installation in collaboration with artist Peter Wegner , the company returned to perform lighting and display upgrades designed to preserve the artwork and its dynamic visual experience.

The project included removing the display’s existing internal lighting and installing new LED lighting and power supplies, refreshing vinyl on select words and securing internal wiring to prevent shadows or visual obstructions.

Following the upgrades, YESCO also reassembled and secured the display.

Located at the Stanford Graduate School of Business Knight Management Center, the installation, titled ‘Monument to Change as a Verb’ uses an ever-changing sequence of illuminated adverbs to explore the many ways change can occur.

Originally completed in 2012, the 14-foot-by-18-foot installation features 308 adverbs programmed to illuminate individually and in choreographed groupings.

“Returning to Stanford 14 years after we first brought Peter Wegner’s vision to life speaks to an important part of what YESCO does,” said Jeff Young , chief revenue officer, YESCO. “Our role doesn’t end when an installation is complete. Maintaining and updating complex art displays ensures the original artistic intent can continue to resonate with new generations of students, faculty and visitors.”

The installation combines language, light and reflection to invite viewers to consider what it means to create change as well as the many ways in which change can be approached. Its highly reflective exterior incorporates laminated glass panels and precision-cut aluminum, allowing passersby and the surrounding environment to become part of the visual experience.

Behind the display, a highly customized internal grid system enables each word to illuminate independently or alongside other adverbs. YESCO’s original lighting control system was designed with more than 80 programmed scenes and sequences, creating shifting graphic patterns and movements across the installation. Randomized sequencing helps continually alter the experience for viewers encountering the artwork.
