Why Proof of Play, Not Attribution, Is DOOH's Real Weak Point

Operators and vendors have poured investment into attribution, connecting screen exposure to sales outcomes, while the more basic question of whether an ad actually played on a given screen remains largely unverified at scale, according to the piece, written by advertising technology writer Vishak.
The argument matters to anyone billing media off a screen network. In digital advertising, a single verified impression tells you the delivery path works, because the same code path serves every viewer. Out-of-home does not work that way. Each screen is a physical device that can fail independently of every other screen in the estate, so confirming that one panel played a spot tells an operator nothing about the other thousands that were supposed to.
The piece breaks down what has to hold true for a single out-of-home impression to count: the display has power and is actually on rather than in standby; the player-to-display signal path is intact; the correct content was downloaded and played at the right duration with audio in the intended state; and the screen is physically unobstructed and viewable. Counted properly, the author puts the number of independent points of failure at around 40 per screen, many of which generate no system alert at all. A cable that drops overnight, a pallet placed in front of a screen, or a display stuck in standby can all leave a campaign management system reporting a clean day while the panel itself is dark.
The core distinction drawn is between a player reporting what it intended to do and a device confirming what actually happened. Only the latter, the piece argues, counts as verification, and most networks are still built on the former.
For operators, the practical implications are about speed and triage: detecting a fault in hours rather than days, working out what can be fixed remotely versus what needs a technician on site, and reconciling billed impressions honestly when delivery cannot be confirmed. The author frames this as unglamorous, revenue-negative work, since verification shows up as impressions an operator chooses not to bill rather than as a feature to market.
The piece stops short of naming a standard, product, or vendor that solves this end to end, and says no general, portable verification method exists across the industry today. It frames the gap as partly a standards problem and partly a buyer-education problem, suggesting advertisers start asking operators what share of their estate can be verified at device level, how fast dark screens are caught and fixed, and what happens to impression counts when delivery cannot be confirmed.

In-Store Retail Media: Before Attributing Ad Impressions, Prove It Played
Buy digital media and you can check it for yourself. Open the browser, find your ad, screenshot it. That check works because one observation generalises – if the creative rendered for you, the delivery path works.
With Out of Home, that logic breaks. You can stand in front of one screen and confirm your spot played on it but you have learned nothing about the other three thousand (that may have played).
Digital counts impressions against a delivery path. Out of home counts them against a physical device. Devices fail independently.
Most of the industry’s innovation has gone into attribution – connecting exposure to outcome. That work is real and it is getting better. Verification has not had the same investment or the same conversation, and it is the layer everything else stands on. An attribution model built on impressions that cannot be confirmed is measuring something that may not have happened.
For a single out-of-home impression to be real, four groups of things have to hold at once.
Power and display state. Power reaching the panel, not stopping at a tripped breaker. The display switched on rather than in standby. The correct input selected. Firmware in a known state. Brightness sufficient for the ambient light at that site at that hour – a level that reads well at dawn in a covered concourse can be invisible at midday behind glass. Make and model matter here too, because panels do not all report their own state the same way, or at all.
The signal path. Player running, reachable and not wedged. Cable seated and undamaged. The handshake between player and display actually holding. This is the quietest failure in the chain: a connection that drops overnight leaves a black screen while every upstream system continues to report normal.
Delivery and playout. Content downloaded ahead of the schedule rather than mid-flight. The schedule executed rather than skipped, deferred or substituted. The right creative, at the right duration. Audio in the intended state, because muted and unmuted are materially different products sold at the same price.
The environment. The screen unobstructed and viewable. A seasonal fixture, a pallet, a repositioned barrier – physical changes that generate no system event whatsoever and end the impression completely.
Count the independent points properly and you land around forty. Different estatesand networks will count differently, which is itself part of the problem, but the order of magnitude holds: forty things, each capable of failing silently, across thousands of sites at once, in aisles, forecourts, transit concourses, parking structures and charging bays that share almost no operating conditions.
The instinct borrowed from digital is to verify a sample and extrapolate. It does not transfer.
Out-of-home impressions are counted per device, and the failure modes are local: this breaker, this cable, this panel, this obstruction. Ten confirmed screens in a thousand-screen estate tell you that ten screens worked. The remaining 990 are unmeasured, not implied.
That is the structural reason verification has to be device-level rather than statistical.
The reporting layer cannot see most of it
A schedule dispatches. A player acknowledges. A log records a playout. The campaign management system reports a clean day.
Meanwhile the panel has been dark since 3am.
This is why out-of-home measurement is an edge problem rather than a data problem. A backend cannot reconstruct a fact that was never captured at the edge. If nothing on the device independently confirmed that a frame rendered on a powered, visible display, that information does not exist downstream and no amount of modelling recovers it.
The distinction that matters is between a player reporting what it intended to do and a device confirming what actually happened – display power state, real signal presence, rendered output, ideally checked against something the player itself cannot assert on its own behalf. Those are different classes of telemetry, and only the second is verification.
Detecting presence is easy. Detecting absence, on device, with nobody standing there, is the hard part.
A fault found matters only if it gets fixed inside the campaign that is paying for it.
That means detection in hours rather than days. It means triage – separating what can be recovered remotely, by restarting a player or reissuing content, from what needs a person physically dispatched to site. It means routing the fault to whoever can act on it, with enough context that they arrive with the right part rather than diagnosing on arrival. And it means reconciling the affected impressions honestly rather than quietly.
Finding a dark screen on day nine of a fourteen-day flight is not a solved problem. It is a smaller version of the same one.
A national buy runs across sites the advertiser will never visit, on hardware they will never see. They cannot check any of it. The transaction rests entirely on the operator’s word.
That is a trust relationship, not a measurement one. Good inventory without verifiable delivery gets discounted, and the budget moves somewhere more legible. An operator who can show what played, where, when and in what condition has something better than good screens – numbers a buyer can defend internally.
The work is unglamorous. Verification infrastructure is invisible when it functions, and shows up as revenue declined: impressions not billed because delivery could not be confirmed. That is a hard thing to fund and an easy thing to defer.
There is no general, portable way to verify the full chain today. Strong operators each solve part of it, their own way, against their own definitions. That fragmentation is the gap, and it is solvable – as much a standards problem as an engineering one. The standards work of the last two to three years has moved faster than the decade before it.
The other half is education. Buyers have learned to interrogate attribution methodology and have not yet learned to interrogate delivery. They should ask:
What share of your estate can you verify at device level, and how?
How fast do you detect a dark screen, and how fast do you fix it?
What happens to my impression count when delivery cannot be confirmed?
Operators who have done the work will have answers.
