Western Union has signed on programmatic DOOH company Screenverse to handle advertiser access to the Western Union Media Network, according to a press release. The deal puts a financial services screen network, one not previously available through standard programmatic pipes, in front of the buyers who use them.

For operators and media buyers watching venue expansion in DOOH, this matters because financial services locations are not a category most networks have built out at scale. Western Union's screens sit in check-cashing centers, banks, supermarkets, pharmacies and convenience stores, putting ads in front of people at the moment they are handling money. The company says the network spans more than 2,600 digital screens across 124 U.S. markets and generates more than 623 million monthly impressions.

Why the venue matters

Screenverse senior vice president of supply Nick Sadler said in the release that Western Union offers something the DOOH ecosystem has lacked: a national financial services footprint reaching consumers during actual transactions. He called financial services an "under built venue category" and said the partnership brings programmatic buyers the reach and targeting they expect.

The release also points to an audience angle: Western Union's locations skew toward consumers who primarily use cash or checks, a group that is harder to reach through conventional digital advertising and targeting. That positions the network as a way for advertisers to reach people who show up less often in programmatic data elsewhere.

Josh Bernstein, Western Union's director of media network operations, framed the move as a step toward sophistication and reach for the network, and credited Screenverse with bringing "an unbiased, independent perspective" that opens the network to new buyers.

What is not specified

The announcement does not say what hardware or CMS runs the screens, how screens are measured for attention or verification, or what inventory categories or pricing will look like for advertisers. It also does not specify whether Screenverse has exclusive rights to sell the inventory or whether Western Union will continue selling through other channels alongside this deal.

For digital signage operators and media network owners in adjacent verticals, retail, pharmacy, banking, the deal is a reminder that programmatic DOOH buyers are increasingly interested in venues defined by transaction context rather than just foot traffic or dwell time. Networks that can demonstrate a distinct, hard-to-reach audience at the point of a specific financial or retail behavior may find new demand from advertisers who buy through existing programmatic systems, provided the network can supply the reporting and targeting rigor those buyers expect.

Western Union, a cross-border, cross-currency money movement, has partnered with Screenverse, a programmatic technology partner for digital out-of-home, to expand the reach of the Western Union Media Network.

The partnership gives advertisers the opportunity to connect with consumers as they manage money, make payments and navigate everyday financial decisions, according to a press release.

Western Union's DOOH media network spans more than 2,600 digital screens across 124 U.S. markets and generates more than 623 million monthly impressions.

Screens are positioned across financial services and everyday retail environments, including check-cashing centers, banks, supermarkets, pharmacies, and convenience stores.

"Western Union brings something the DOOH ecosystem hasn't had at scale by creating a national financial services footprint that reaches consumers in the middle of real transaction moments," Nick Sadler, senior vice president of supply at Screenverse, said in the release. "Financial services has been an under built venue category, and this partnership opens it up with the reach and targeting rigor programmatic buyers expect. For advertisers, it's a rare combination of high-attention environments, a captive audience, and inventory that clears through the pipes they're already buying."

Western Union's financial services footprint can help advertisers reach consumers who primarily use cash or checks and may be less visible through traditional digital targeting methods.

"Our partnership with Screenverse marks an important step in expanding the reach and sophistication of the Western Union Media Network," Josh Bernstein, director of media network operations at Western Union, said in the release. "Screenverse brings an unbiased, independent perspective that opens doors to new buyers and fresh demand. We're thrilled to work with a partner whose goals are fully aligned with helping us grow."
