Vistar Media is setting up dedicated operations in Japan, giving the digital out-of-home ad tech company a local team to work directly with media owners, advertisers and agencies in the country. Vistar is part of T-Mobile Advertising Solutions.

For screen operators and network owners in Japan, this matters because it brings Vistar's full programmatic stack into the market rather than access through a partner or reseller. According to the release, that includes a digital OOH demand-side platform, a supply-side platform, an ad server, a player, a device management system and traditional OOH planning software. In other words, Vistar is offering both sides of the transaction: tools for media owners to sell inventory programmatically and tools for advertisers and agencies to buy it, plus the device management layer that ties screens into the system.

The company named Yosuke Maekawa as country manager to lead the Japan operation. According to the release, Maekawa has more than two decades in digital media, advertising technology and business development, with prior leadership roles at Amazon, Expedia Group, PubMatic and comScore. He will run Vistar's growth strategy and day-to-day operations in the country.

Michael Provenzano, co-founder and CEO of Vistar Media and also SVP of T-Mobile Advertising Solutions, framed the move as a bet on an already mature market. "Japan has long been recognized as one of the most advanced out-of-home markets in the world," he said in the release, adding that Vistar wants to combine "local expertise, proven technology and scale of Vistar's global marketplace."

What this means for operators

For Japanese media owners running digital screens, a local Vistar team lowers the barrier to plugging inventory into programmatic demand, since deals, technical integration and support can now happen through people on the ground rather than remotely. For international advertisers and agencies already buying through Vistar in other markets, the expansion should make it simpler to add Japanese screen networks to existing campaigns using the same platform they use elsewhere.

The release does not name specific media owner or agency partners already signed up in Japan, nor does it give a timeline for when the local platform components go live or what pricing or revenue-share terms will look like. It also does not say how Vistar's Japan push relates to existing SSPs or DOOH ad tech vendors already operating in the country, which is a competitive landscape any operator evaluating this move will want to check before committing inventory.

Vistar's broader positioning, as a global programmatic OOH platform now backed by T-Mobile Advertising Solutions, suggests the company is treating Japan as a priority growth market rather than a one-off deal. Whether that translates into meaningful new demand for local screen operators will depend on adoption details the announcement does not yet spell out.
