Tysons Corner Center Adds SNA Displays LED Screen to New Plaza

Tysons Corner Center in McLean, Virginia has installed a 3.9 mm Empire Exterior LED video screen from SNA Displays as part of its new PenFed Plaza, an outdoor civic space built onto the mall property. The installation gives the Washington, D.C.-area mall another large-format screen to run community programming and advertising content.
According to a press release, the display measures 15 feet by 6 inches by 32 feet by 9 inches, with a resolution of 1,216 by 2,560 pixels, for just over 3.1 million pixels total. The release does not give a pixel pitch comparison to the mall's existing screens or specify brightness, viewing angle, or other technical specs operators typically weigh when evaluating outdoor LED.
Tysons Corner Center is a 1.8-million-square-foot property managed by Macerich, which the release describes as an owner, operator and developer of major retail properties. Jack Hsieh, Macerich's president and CEO, said in the release that PenFed Plaza offers "high-impact community programming and a property-wide media network that delivers exceptional reach and exposure to a ready-to-spend audience." He also called Tysons Corner Center a "Fortress property" within the company's portfolio and a "first-to-market destination for top brands and retailers."
The release frames PenFed Plaza itself as a "first-of-its-kind outdoor civic space" for the Tysons area, though it does not elaborate on what distinguishes it from other mall-adjacent plazas or describe the programming mix planned for the screen.
A Second Screen for the Property
This is not SNA Displays' first project at Tysons Corner Center. The company previously installed a large outdoor video board on the mall's parking garage façade. The new plaza screen effectively gives the property two major LED installations, which the release suggests feeds into a broader "property-wide media network" that Macerich can sell against for advertisers and sponsors.
For mall operators and property managers watching this space, the project is another data point in the trend of retail landlords building out owned media networks across parking structures, plazas and other common areas rather than relying solely on indoor digital signage. The release does not disclose installation cost, content management software, or whether the screen is sold as standalone ad inventory or bundled with other Macerich media assets. It also does not say when the plaza or the screen went live, only that it was recently completed as part of the PenFed Plaza build-out.
