Sony Electronics and Vitec have struck a partnership to integrate Vitec's Avedia IPTV and digital signage platform directly into Sony Bravia displays, according to the companies. The deal removes a piece of hardware that operators have long budgeted for: the external media player.

Vitec's Avedia platform runs on the display's system-on-a-chip rather than through a separate box connected via HDMI. The companies describe it as a player-less IPTV and signage solution, with Vitec's content management system providing centralised control of what they say can be thousands of displays.

For operators, the pitch is lower total cost of ownership and simpler installation. Cutting the external player out of the chain means one less device to procure, mount, cable, power and eventually replace at each screen location. It also reduces the number of failure points in a large estate, since a dead media player has historically meant a service call even when the display itself is fine.

The announcement does not specify pricing, which Bravia models or SoC generations are compatible, or a rollout timeline for specific markets. It also does not say whether existing Bravia displays already in the field can be updated to support Avedia or whether the integration requires new hardware purchases. Those are the practical questions integrators and IT managers will need answered before they can plan deployments around it.

Where this sits in the market

Player-less signage is not a new idea. Several display and software vendors have pushed SoC-based CMS players for years as a way to simplify large rollouts, particularly in retail, hospitality and corporate environments where IPTV and digital signage increasingly run on the same infrastructure. Vitec's Avedia platform is aimed at that convergence, combining live TV distribution with signage content on a single system.

What Sony brings is scale and display technology already deployed across many commercial verticals. Rik Willemse, head of professional display solutions at Sony Europe, said the partnership combines Sony's display technology with Vitec's platform to serve multiple verticals. Eli Garten, Vitec's senior vice-president of global IPTV and partner solutions, called the deal the start of an ongoing collaboration between the two companies.

Neither executive's comments in the release detail specific verticals, deployment numbers or a public product name for the combined offering beyond referencing the Avedia platform. Operators evaluating IPTV and signage consolidation will want to see technical documentation and pricing before treating this as a like-for-like replacement for their current player setup.
