A new double-sided LED pylon now stands outside The Comedy Store's West Hollywood location, adding nearly 1,000 square feet of digital display to one of the Sunset Strip's most recognized addresses.
The structure was developed by out-of-home media company Orange Barrel Media (OBM), with design firm Rios, sign manufacturer Yesco and LED provider SNA Displays working on the build. The Comedy Store, founded in 1972, is closely tied to the history of American stand-up, with a client list that includes Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Carrey.
SNA Displays supplied two Empire Exterior LED screens, each 30 feet tall by 16 feet 3 inches wide (9.1 by 5 meters). Combined, the two screens total approximately 974 square feet and more than 1.4 million pixels, according to the company. Both panels use an 8mm pixel pitch and run at a resolution of 1,140 by 620 pixels. SNA Displays also handled on-site installation management and technical support, the release states.
For operators evaluating exterior LED for street-facing venues, the specs here are worth noting against the broader market. An 8mm pitch is a mid-range choice for a screen of this size and viewing distance, typical for landmark-style pylons meant to read clearly from a moving car or across a busy sidewalk rather than up close. The double-sided configuration lets the structure serve both directions of Sunset Boulevard traffic from a single footprint, a common approach for corner or median sites where real estate is limited.
Design and permitting
Beyond the screens themselves, the pylon incorporates illuminated channel lettering, perforated metal cladding and embossed metal detailing, along with decorative "scroll" elements framing the displays. According to OBM, these design choices were meant to tie the new structure visually to the classic marquee signage historically associated with the Sunset Strip, rather than presenting as a generic digital billboard.
Clay Collett, OBM's vice president of West Coast development, said the company felt "a true sense of responsibility to create something that felt both authentic and visually captivating" given the venue's cultural standing.
OBM led the overall project and coordinated with the City of West Hollywood on approvals, along with Yesco and SNA Displays on fabrication and integration. The company also worked with the Shore family, which founded and still operates The Comedy Store.
The announcement does not disclose a cost, installation timeline, or what content will run on the screens day to day, whether that's Comedy Store branding, event listings, advertising, or some mix. It also does not specify a content management or ad-sales partner for ongoing operation of the pylon.
