SNA Displays builds 21m LED pylon for LA's Comedy Store

SNA Displays has manufactured the LED components for a new digital pylon installed outside the Comedy Store on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, adding another large-format DOOH structure to one of the most watched advertising corridors in the US.
The structure stands about 21 metres tall and uses a double-sided Empire Exterior LED video system arranged in a V-shape. Each screen measures 9 metres tall by 5 metres wide, with an 8mm pixel pitch and a resolution of 1,140 by 620 pixels. The pylon is framed by illuminated decorative 'scroll' elements designed to echo classic marquee signage, along with internally illuminated channel lettering, perforated metal cladding and embossed metal detailing.
For operators and media owners, the project is a reminder that pixel pitch and resolution are only part of the story on flagship structures like this. The architectural dressing, from the scroll elements to the custom cladding, appears to be as central to the brief as the LED panels themselves, which points to a growing trend of treating iconic sign locations as branded architecture rather than standalone screens.
Who built it
Orange Barrel Media led development of the project and will manage advertising sales on the pylon. Design came from interdisciplinary firm RIOS, working with Orange Barrel Media's in-house architecture team, OBM Studio. YESCO and SNA Displays handled installation, with SNA Displays also providing on-site installation management and technical support.
Clay Collett, vice-president of West Coast development at Orange Barrel Media, said the Comedy Store's status as an institution on Sunset Strip meant the sign needed to reflect that legacy while, in his words, setting a new standard for signage on the corridor.
What's missing
The announcement does not disclose the cost of the project, the manufacturer or supplier of the media player and control systems running the display, or a timeline for when the pylon went live or when advertising sales begin. There is also no detail on brightness levels, expected viewing distances, or how the two faces of the V-shaped structure will be programmed independently or in sync. Anyone benchmarking this against other exterior LED landmarks on Sunset Strip, or elsewhere in Los Angeles, will need to look elsewhere for those numbers.
The project adds to SNA Displays' portfolio of large-format exterior LED work and continues Orange Barrel Media's push into iconic, high-traffic sites where the physical structure is designed to be as much a landmark as an ad platform.
