Pannonia Cinemas has swapped a traditional projector setup for a Samsung Onyx Cinema LED display in Screen 10 of the Lurdy Cinema in Budapest, marking the first Onyx installation in Hungary. The 11.5 metre wide, 62 square metre 4K display is being called the largest Onyx screen supporting 3D installed in Europe, according to a report by Hungarian outlet Világgazdaság cited by AV Magazine.

For cinema operators watching the shift away from lamp and laser projection, this is another data point in Samsung's push to get LED walls into auditoriums rather than just retail and corporate lobbies. The company says the panel covers 100% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, runs at up to 120Hz refresh, and hits 300 nits of brightness, which Samsung describes as more than six times the roughly 48 nits typical of conventional projection. Samsung also points to the usual LED advantages over projection: no light leakage, deeper blacks, and self-emissive pixels rather than reflected light off a screen surface.

The installation was not a simple panel swap. Pannonia Cinemas had to build a dedicated support structure to carry the LED wall's weight and rebuild the auditorium around it, alongside a new Dolby 7.1 sound system. That is a reminder to any operator weighing a similar upgrade that Onyx conversions are construction projects, not just equipment orders, with costs beyond the display itself. The announcement does not give a price or installation timeline, nor does it specify the LED pixel pitch or confirm which Onyx product line was used.

Attila Farkas, chief executive of Pannonia Movie Kft, which runs the Pannonia Cinemas network, said the Samsung partnership is "a huge step forward" and that the company plans to roll out similar LED installations across other cinemas in the network. No further sites or timeline were disclosed.

The traditional projection set-up in one of the auditoriums at the Lurdy Cinema in Budapest, Hungary, has been replaced by a 62 sq metre 4K Samsung Onyx Cinema LED display.

A cinema in Budapest has become the first in Hungary to install a Samsung Onyx LED display.

The traditional projection set-up in the Lurdy Cinema’s Screen 10 has been replaced by an 11.5m-wide Samsung Onyx Cinema LED display with 4K resolution.

The 62 sq metre display is the largest Onyx screen supporting 3D to have been installed in Europe , according to a report by Hungarian business and economics news outlet Világgazdaság.

The refurbishment of the auditorium required the construction of a special support structure for the LED wall. A Dolby 7.1 sound system was also installed.

Unlike traditional screen and projector-based systems, the Samsung Onyx LED screen emits its own light, ensuring perfectly defined dark and light tones and true blacks without light leakage.

The 4K resolution panel with 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage delivers a rich colour palette, while a refresh rate of up to 120Hz enables ultra-smooth, continuous motion.

The HDR picture quality enables the display to reach 300 nits of brightness – more than six times the 48 nits of conventional projectors.

Attila Farkas, chief executive of Pannonia Movie Kft, which operates the Pannonia Cinemas network that incorporates the Lurdy Cinema, said: “ Our partnership with Samsung is a huge step forward, allowing us to offer our viewers an exclusive and groundbreaking experience.

“We are confident in the success of the project, and we plan to implement similar developments in other cinemas in the network in the future.”
