Proto Wins US Design Patent for Proto M Holographic Display

2026-08-04 · via DailyDOOH

Proto Inc. has been granted U.S. Design Patent No. D1,134,257 S for the design of its Proto M holographic display, according to the company. The patent was issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office and lists founder David Nussbaum alongside co-inventors Doug Barry, Edward Ginis and Raphael Kryszek. It was filed February 22, 2023.

For operators evaluating holographic telepresence as a display category, patent activity like this is a signal of how the underlying IP landscape is shaping up, even if it does not change what is available to buy today. Proto says the design patent adds to a broader portfolio that already includes U.S. Utility Patent No. 11,428,952, covering the company's core holographic display and image-capture method, along with patent recognition in Canada and Mexico.

What Proto M Is

The Proto M is described by the company as a compact, desktop version of its larger Epic and Luma units. It runs on Proto's own operating system and software platform, which the company says enables real-time, self-contained holographic telepresence and what it calls embodied AI. The pitch is a smaller footprint that fits into offices, retail counters or other spaces where a full-size holographic unit would not work.

Raphael Kryszek, Proto's Chief Product and AI Officer, said in a statement provided to DailyDOOH: "This patent recognizes the original design work behind Proto M. We created it to make holographic communication and AI spatial computing more accessible, bringing the presence and connection of our full-size systems into a compact format that fits naturally into more spaces. That vision continues with M2, and as the category grows, protecting the innovations that helped define it matters more than ever."

That reference to an M2 suggests a successor product is in the works, though the announcement gives no further detail on specifications, timing or pricing for either the M or any follow-on unit.

What This Means for Buyers

A design patent protects the ornamental appearance of a product rather than its function, so this grant does not tell operators anything new about performance, resolution, capture method or software capability. Those questions remain open. What it does confirm is that Proto is actively building a legal moat around its hardware design as holographic and spatial-compute displays move from novelty demos toward deployed use cases in retail, corporate lobbies and events.

Proto worked with law firm Nolan Heimann LLP to secure both its design and utility patents in the U.S. and internationally, according to the release. The company has not said whether it plans further patent filings tied to the mentioned M2 product.
