PPDS Extends Ecodesign Principles to Wider Display Range Under Redesign Framework

PPDS is widening the sustainability approach it built for its Ecodesign displays into a broader framework called Redesign, applying it across its Philips Professional Displays portfolio. For operators buying commercial screens, this signals that lifecycle and repairability considerations that were previously limited to a single product line are becoming standard across PPDS' range.

According to the company, Redesign covers the full product lifecycle: design, manufacturing, packaging, delivery, day-to-day operation, repair and end-of-life recycling. PPDS says it will apply the framework progressively to new professional displays worldwide, though the announcement does not specify a timeline for full rollout or which future models are covered beyond those already named.

The framework is organized around six principles PPDS calls reduce, reuse, repair, refurbish, recycle and reinvent. In practice, the company says this means using less material and energy in manufacturing and operation, designing products for longer service life with upgradeable components, making repairs easier, and increasing use of recycled and bio-based materials. For buyers, the repairability and upgradeability angle is the one worth watching, since it speaks directly to total cost of ownership on large screen deployments where swapping out a whole unit is expensive.

PPDS says the approach originated with the Philips Signage 3650 Ecodesign display and traces back to work it began on the QE-Line Ecodesign display in 2023, which PPDS claims cut power consumption by up to 50 percent compared with the equivalent Philips Signage 3000 Series Q-Line model. That figure comes from PPDS and has not been independently verified.

Products already incorporating the Redesign framework include the Philips Signage 7000 Series, introduced at Infocomm 2026, along with the Philips Signage 5000 Series D-Line and Signage 2000 Series. The announcement does not detail specific technical changes to these models beyond the general framework principles, so it is unclear what, if any, performance or spec differences buyers should expect compared with prior generations.

PPDS also points to changes outside the display itself, in packaging and transport. The company says it has moved to smaller packaging, recycled brown cardboard, and packaging that is largely free of plastic. PPDS estimates these palletization and packaging changes will cut CO2 emissions by 184 metric tons annually and save roughly 107 metric tons of wood each year. Those numbers are PPDS' own estimates and the release gives no methodology for how they were calculated.

Sustainability credentials are increasingly part of procurement conversations for large signage rollouts, particularly for retail and corporate clients with their own emissions targets. A broader framework applied across the catalog, rather than a single flagship model, makes PPDS' sustainability story easier to point to in tenders, though buyers will still want spec sheets and independent data before treating the claims as settled.
