oOh!media Rolls Out New Zealand's First LED Bus Shelter Network in Christchurch

2026-08-10 · via DailyDOOH

oOh!media New Zealand has started installing LED screens in bus shelters across Christchurch, which the company says is the first network of its kind in the country. Four sites are already live, with new installations happening weekly.

According to the company, more than 70 digital bus shelters will be running by the end of 2026, with the full network of 110 sites completed by the end of June 2027. The rollout follows oOh!media's renewed advertising contract with Christchurch City Council, which was finalised earlier this year.

For operators and buyers thinking about street furniture networks, the headline change is a swap from LCD to 75-inch LED panels. oOh!media says the new screens offer greater brightness, higher resolution, wider viewing angles and better contrast than the displays they replace. The company also claims the LED units use around 60 percent less energy than the LCD screens they are replacing, along with lower maintenance needs and a longer operational lifespan. None of these figures are independently verified in the release, and the announcement does not specify the LED pixel pitch, brightness in nits, or the vendor supplying the hardware.

Kelly Harvey, head of New Zealand at oOh!media, is quoted saying the launch sets "a new benchmark for the quality and standard of street furniture in New Zealand." The company cites 190 million monthly impressions and reach to 87 percent of the Canterbury population each month, though it does not explain the methodology behind those figures beyond a footnote crediting KnOOH audience measurement data from July 2026.

What it means for advertisers and the industry

Bus shelter and street furniture networks are a recurring battleground in DOOH, since they combine high dwell time with location-based targeting in dense urban environments. A move to LED from LCD in this format is notable mainly for the maintenance and energy pitch, both of which matter to media owners running large fleets of outdoor panels that are exposed to weather and constant use. Lower power draw and fewer service callouts translate directly into operating cost, which is likely the underlying business case here as much as the visual upgrade.

The release frames this as part of a broader push by oOh!media to expand premium digital OOH inventory across New Zealand, but gives no detail on the capital cost of the rollout, the screen resolution, or whether the new inventory will support programmatic buying. It also does not name the panel manufacturer. For an industry reader, those gaps are the obvious follow-up questions once the network is further along.

Aotearoa’s First LED Bus Shelter Screen Network

Oh!media New Zealand has launched the Aotearoa’s first LED bus shelter screens, marking the next phase of Christchurch’s Out of Home evolution and giving advertisers access to more flexible and higher-impact digital advertising screens.

Kelly Harvey , head of New Zealand at oOh!media, told us “Launching New Zealand’s first LED bus shelter network is a significant milestone for the industry, setting a new benchmark for the quality and standard of street furniture in New Zealand. With 190 million monthly impressions and the ability to reach 87 per cent of the Canterbury population each month, this premium digital network gives advertisers a powerful way new way to connect with audiences at scale.”

The rollout is now underway, with four LED sites already live and new installations taking place each week. More than 70 digital bus shelters will be deployed across Christchurch by the end of 2026, with the full network of 110 completed by the end of June 2027. The rollout follows the renewal of oOh!media’s Christchurch City Council advertising contract earlier this year.

Featuring next-generation 75-inch energy-efficient LED screens, the upgraded sites deliver a premium street furniture experience, with greater brightness, higher resolution, enhanced contrast and wider viewing angles.

The upgrade will also replace older infrastructure and introduce new digital capabilities across key sites, expanding audience reach while creating more opportunities for advertisers to run dynamic, contextually relevant campaigns across Christchurch.

Alongside improved creative performance, the new LED technology offers significant sustainability benefits. The screens use around 60 per cent less energy than traditional LCD displays, require less maintenance and have a longer operational lifespan, helping reduce waste while improving the efficiency of the network.

The Christchurch rollout forms part of oOh!’s continued investment in premium digital OOH environments across Aotearoa, providing advertisers with greater reach, flexibility and opportunities to deliver more impactful campaigns.
