Insurance company Lemonade has put up a digital sign along a roadway outside Austin, Texas, that reacts to drivers' speeds in real time, according to a Fast Company report cited by Digital Signage Today.

The sign, described as pink and hard to miss, was built with creative agency Cash Studio. When a driver exceeds the speed limit, the display shows their speed back to them. When a driver stays within the limit, the sign switches to a congratulatory message. Examples cited in the report include "Way To Drive a Fast Car Slow," "Obsessed With Your Safe Driving," and "You Understood The Assignment."

For operators and campaign planners, this is a straightforward example of a digital-out-of-home unit built around a single sensor-triggered rule: detect speed, swap the message. The report does not say what hardware or content management system runs the display, what sensor or radar unit feeds it speed data, or how messages are triggered and updated. Those are the details a signage integrator would want before trying to replicate the concept.

Cash Studio founder Ivan Cash told Fast Company the brief was to create a nontraditional campaign for Lemonade's car insurance product, which prices policies based on safe driving. The agency chose Texas because, according to Cash, the state has more car crashes than any other. The tie-in to Lemonade's business model is direct: safer drivers pay less for coverage, and the sign publicly rewards that behavior on the spot.

The stunt is a reminder that digital signage's use in advertising is not limited to retail aisles or shopping mall lobbies. Roadside DOOH tied to real-time data, in this case vehicle speed, gives brands a way to generate earned media and social sharing beyond the physical location of the sign itself. What the report does not address is deployment scale, whether Lemonade plans additional signs in other markets, or how long this particular installation will run.
