Lamar Runs User-Submitted Photos on Digital Billboards for Grandparents Day
2026-09-02 · via DailyDOOH
Lamar Advertising is opening its digital billboard network to consumer-submitted content for Grandparents' Day, running family photos alongside paid advertising on screens across the US from September 9 through 16.
Anyone can upload a photo through Lamar's submission process. Participants get an email with a map showing which digital billboards will display their tribute, along with a virtual mockup of how the submission will look on screen. Lamar says selected photos will also appear on its social media channels.
Submissions opened September 1 and close September 13, the date of this year's US Grandparents' Day. Lamar is capping accepted submissions at 5,000 per day. The company says it will reject photos containing business names or logos, political messages, or content it deems inappropriate.
John Miller, Lamar's EVP of Sales and Marketing, said in the announcement that the company wanted to use the reach of its billboard network to let families recognize grandparents, calling Lamar billboards a way to reach millions of viewers daily.
Why it matters for DOOH operators
This is a branded, no-cost user-generated content play rather than a paid ad product, but it points to a pattern outdoor and digital-out-of-home operators keep returning to: seasonal or occasion-based campaigns that invite the public to put personal content on commercial screens. For network operators, these campaigns generate press coverage and social sharing without displacing much paid inventory, since Lamar says the photos will rotate among what it calls "the usual advertisements" rather than replace a dedicated ad slot.
The announcement does not say how content moderation will be handled at scale, whether submissions are reviewed manually or automatically, or how photo quality and aspect ratio requirements are managed across a billboard network with varying screen sizes and resolutions. It also does not disclose how many billboards will participate, which markets are included, or whether advertisers were notified that their paid rotations will share airtime with these submissions during the campaign window.
For content management teams running similar promotions, the logistics worth watching are the ones Lamar left out: file format and size limits, turnaround time between submission and go-live, and how a 5,000-per-day cap gets enforced when demand varies by market. Those are the operational details that determine whether a UGC campaign like this runs smoothly on a network Lamar's size or creates a scheduling headache for the trafficking team.
