Extron Doubles I/O Density on Quantum Ultra II Video Wall Processors

Extron has added eight-channel HDMI input and output cards to its Quantum Ultra II video wall processor line, doubling the channel density of its existing four-channel cards. For operators running or specifying large video wall installations, that means more inputs and outputs per rack unit and, according to Extron, lower system cost for bigger designs that might otherwise require multiple chassis.

The new Quantum IN8HDMI 4K PLUS and OUT8HDMI 4K PLUS cards each support resolutions up to 4096 by 2160 at 60Hz, or custom resolutions up to 8K wide with full 4:4:4 color sampling, according to the company. That puts them in line with the chroma subsampling specs Extron already offers on its four-channel HDMI, FOX3 and DTP3 cards, which run at 18Gbps and support 4K/60 at 4:4:4 with HDCP 2.3 compliance.

The IN8HDMI card adds live confidence preview of connected sources inside Extron's Video Configuration Software and its Express Mobile Software for Quantum Ultra. For integrators building large canvases with many sources, that kind of preview during setup can cut down on guesswork when assigning inputs to a wall layout.

On the audio side, Extron says embedded audio from any input can be routed to the first output of any canvas, or pulled into a full Dante audio network when a Quantum OUT32AT card is installed. The platform as a whole supports up to 20 canvases with mixed resolutions and orientations, which matters for venues running multiple independent video wall zones off one processor rather than a single uniform wall.

The cards sit on Extron's HyperLane video bus, which the company says delivers throughput up to 500Gbps, and are described as fully compatible with existing cards in the Quantum Ultra platform. That backward compatibility is the practical selling point here: integrators with existing Quantum Ultra II chassis built on four-channel HDMI, fiber or twisted-pair cards can mix in the new eight-channel cards rather than replacing hardware outright.

Casey Hall, Extron's chief marketing officer, said the new cards deliver what the company calls the highest I/O density in the line while minimizing rack space, and that the mixed-card compatibility makes Quantum Ultra II suited to projects needing HDMI, twisted pair, fiber or streaming connectivity in combination.

The announcement does not give pricing for the new cards or a shipping date, and it does not say how the per-channel cost compares directly to the four-channel cards it is meant to undercut. For signage integrators weighing processor choices against competing video wall platforms, those numbers will matter more than the headline density claim once the cards are actually quoted on a project.

The video wall processor line has been expanded with eight-channel 4K HDMI input and output cards that lower system cost and allow larger designs to fit into a single Quantum Ultra II chassis.

Extron has expanded its Quantum Ultra II video wall processor product line with HDMI input and output cards offering twice the capacity of four-channel 4K PLUS cards.

The eight-channel Quantum IN8HDMI 4K PLUS and OUT8HDMI 4K PLUS cards lower system cost and allow larger designs to fit into a single Quantum Ultra II chassis.

Each channel supports resolutions up to 4,096 by 2,160 at 60Hz or custom resolutions up to 8K wide with full 4:4:4 color sampling.

The IN8HDMI 4K PLUS card provides live confidence preview of sources in Extron’s Video Configuration Software and Express Mobile Software for Quantum Ultra, streamlining setup and simplifying preset design.

Route embedded audio from any input to the first output of any canvas or integrate it into a full Dante audio framework with a Quantum OUT32AT installed.

The Quantum Ultra II range offers future-ready connectivity, with the HyperLane video bus delivering a throughput of up to 500Gbps.

The HDMI 4K PLUS, FOX3 and DTP3 input and output cards feature 18Gbps connections that support resolutions up to 4K/60 at 4:4:4 with full HDCP 2.3 compliance.

Embedded source audio can be routed to each active canvas or integrated into a Dante network. The processor supports up to 20 canvases with mixed resolutions and screen orientations for added design flexibility.

Features such as output overlap and custom output resolutions ensure display compatibility, while RS‑232, USB and Ethernet interfaces support direct connection to control systems.

Casey Hall, Extron’s chief marketing officer, said: “Our new eight-channel HDMI cards for Quantum Ultra II deliver the highest I/O density while minimising required rack space.

“They are fully compatible with other cards in the Quantum Ultra platform, making Quantum Ultra II the perfect choice for video wall designs requiring HDMI, twisted pair, fibre or streaming connectivity.”
