BrightSign has launched BrightSign Control Plus, the top tier of its device management software for digital signage players, on Amazon Web Services. The move matters to operators running large player fleets because it shifts the backend infrastructure for fleet monitoring and control onto AWS's cloud, which the company says lets it scale support to more than 300,000 deployed players while keeping costs in check.

BrightSign Control Plus is built to give operators a consolidated view into fleet status across a network of media players, according to a press release from the company. That kind of dashboard is standard fare among device management tools competing in this space, but the scale claim here, over 300,000 players, is notable and puts BrightSign in the same conversation as other large-scale signage CMS and device management vendors that have leaned on public cloud providers to handle growth without building out their own data center capacity.

Steve Durkee, CEO of BrightSign, said in the release that running Control Plus on AWS is a continuation of the company's mission to pair hardware with the right software, services and support. He said the AWS platform allows BrightSign to offer what he described as reliable, secure, flexible and sustainable digital signage regardless of deployment size, and gives customers visibility and control over their networks from anywhere.

For operators, the practical questions are what this changes day to day. The announcement does not say whether pricing for Control Plus changes with the AWS migration, whether there is a required upgrade path for customers already on an earlier tier of BrightSign's device management tools, or what specific AWS services (compute, storage, monitoring) underpin the offering. It also does not detail new features beyond the consolidated fleet view, so it is not clear whether this launch adds functionality or is primarily an infrastructure change that should be invisible to most day-to-day users beyond improved reliability and scale headroom.

BrightSign describes itself as the global market leader in digital signage media players, a claim the company has made in prior communications. That market position means changes to its device management stack are likely to affect a large base of installed players across retail, QSR, transportation and corporate signage networks. Operators managing large or growing fleets, or those who have run into performance limits with BrightSign's existing device management tiers, are the audience most likely to be affected by this shift. Smaller deployments may see little practical difference beyond whatever reliability gains come from AWS's infrastructure.

BrightSign has not said when Control Plus becomes generally available to all customers or what the tiering looks like relative to its other device management products, details that potential buyers will want before committing budget.
