AVI-SPL Turns to Drone Delivery for Faster AV Field Service

AVI-SPL, one of the largest AV integrators serving digital signage and corporate AV deployments, has partnered with drone logistics company Matternet to speed up delivery of replacement parts and equipment to field technicians. For operators who depend on integrators to keep screens and players running, the deal is aimed squarely at one of the industry's oldest headaches: getting a failed part to a technician fast enough to hit a service window.
Matternet describes itself, according to the announcement, as the only FAA Type-Certified drone delivery platform. AVI-SPL plans to use that certification to move parts into congested urban and suburban markets where ground transport is often the bottleneck between a diagnosed fault and a completed repair.
John Murphy, COO at AVI-SPL, said the partnership is meant to support technicians in the field and reimagine how critical equipment moves through the company's service ecosystem. Matternet founder and CEO Andreas Raptopoulos said drone delivery can cut what is normally a multi-hour wait for a part down to minutes, which he argues lowers the cost of completing a job as well as the time it takes.
What this means for signage operators
For digital signage networks, most service-level agreements are built around response time and mean time to repair. A media player, controller board or driver that fails on a busy retail or transit screen can sit dark for hours if the right part is stuck in a van somewhere across town. AVI-SPL says it sees an opening to build premium support tiers around faster response times, which suggests operators with tighter SLAs could eventually pay for drone-backed service as an upgrade rather than getting it as standard.
The announcement is short on specifics that operators will want before judging how much this actually changes. There is no detail on which cities or markets will get the service first, what kinds of parts are small and light enough to qualify for drone transport, how pricing might work, or a timeline for wider rollout. AVI-SPL says it intends to expand drone logistics across its supply chain over time to reduce reliance on road transport, but the release does not say how quickly that expansion will happen or how it will be measured.
The move puts AVI-SPL among the first AV integrators to publicly commit to drone logistics for field service, ahead of any similar announcement from rival integrators serving the same digital signage and corporate AV market. Whether it becomes a genuine differentiator will depend on how broadly and reliably the service actually rolls out, details the companies have not yet provided.

AVI-SPL partners with Matternet to use autonomous drones for faster delivery of mission-critical parts, reducing service delays in congested cities.
International integrator AVI-SPL announced a partnership with Matternet, accordong to their own information the world’s only FAA Type-Certified drone delivery platform, to deploy drone logistics to projects in metropolitan markets.
The partnership aims to deliver critical AV equipment and replacement parts to field technicians in minutes, reducing delays in congested urban and suburban areas.
“At AVI-SPL, we are always looking for new ways to enhance the customer experience and support our technicians in the field,” said John Murphy, COO at AVI-SPL. “This partnership is an important step toward reimagining how critical equipment moves through our service ecosystem.” According to Murphy, autonomous drone delivery can reduce transportation delays, and create entirely new service capabilities for our customers.
AVI-SPL expects the drone delivery service to be used primarily for the rapid transport of critical components to installers and technicians working in congested urban areas, helping to avoid delays associated with ground transportation. The company also sees an opportunity to develop premium support offerings, enabling faster response times and more demanding service-level agreements for customers with high service requirements.
Over time, AVI-SPL plans to integrate the service more broadly across its supply chain network, with the aim of reducing reliance on road transport and improving operational efficiency in dense metropolitan markets.
“Drone delivery will transform time-critical B2B logistics,” said Andreas Raptopoulos, Founder and CEO of Matternet. “Instead of waiting hours for a part, a technician can have it within minutes, which allows a job to be completed faster and at a lower cost. We’re excited to partner with AVI-SPL to bring the value of ultra-fast autonomous delivery to this vertical.”
