Spanish grocery chain Alcampo plans to install more than 560,000 electronic shelf labels (ESLs) from Hanshow across 84 supermarkets, in a project worth €3.8m, according to a report by International Supermarket News. Installation is scheduled for 2026.

For operators watching the retail tech space, this is another sign that ESLs are moving from pilot projects to full-estate rollouts at major grocery chains, following a pattern already seen elsewhere in Europe. Alcampo says the system will let it manage prices and product information centrally, cutting the need for staff to print, distribute and manually swap paper labels.

What the retailer expects to gain

Alcampo expects the ESL system to improve pricing accuracy and free more than 42,750 hours of staff time annually, time it says can be redirected to customer service and other store tasks. Hanshow estimates the switch from paper will remove about 1,843 kilometres of price strips from annual use and avoid roughly 8.4 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. These are Hanshow's figures, not independently verified.

The rollout covers standard grocery aisles as well as fresh and frozen sections. Larger label formats are planned for service counters, and low-temperature models are intended for use alongside frozen goods. The deployment pairs Hanshow's ESL technology with HL Display's Slimline shelf infrastructure, with the stated goal of keeping displayed prices consistent with Alcampo's back-end systems and reducing pricing discrepancies at the shelf edge.

The announcement does not specify which ESL models or display sizes will be used beyond the general format descriptions, nor does it detail the communication protocol (such as NFC, Bluetooth or infrared) that will drive updates across the estate.

Part of a larger store-modernisation push

The ESL project sits inside a wider €52m investment Alcampo has earmarked for 2026 to modernise 26 stores across nine Spanish autonomous communities, covering five hypermarkets and 21 supermarkets. That broader programme includes refrigeration upgrades, enclosed refrigerated cabinets, air-conditioning improvements and high-efficiency LED lighting, which Alcampo estimates could cut energy use by more than 20% at the affected sites.

The deal also extends Hanshow's footprint in Spanish grocery retail. In August, Supermercados El Jamón selected Hanshow for a separate three-year programme covering nearly three million ESLs across more than 370 stores. Taken together, the two contracts point to ESL vendors increasingly competing for large-scale, multi-year grocery contracts in the Spanish market, a segment that overlaps with digital signage suppliers eyeing in-store retail media and shelf-edge advertising opportunities.

The €3.8m project will centralise shelf-edge updates, reduce paper use and free an estimated 42,750 hours of store staff time annually.

Alcampo’s store-modernisation programme covers the deployment of more than 560,000 Hanshow ESLs across 84 supermarkets in Spain.

Installation is scheduled for 2026 and represents an investment of €3.8m, International Supermarket News reported . The retailer expects the system to improve pricing accuracy and reduce the labour required for shelf-edge changes.

Hanshow estimates that replacing paper labels will remove about 1,843 kilometres of price strips from annual use and avoid approximately 8.4 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

Centralised pricing across store departments

The ESL platform will allow Alcampo to manage prices and product information centrally, reducing the need for employees to print, distribute and manually replace paper labels. The retailer expects the technology to free more than 42,750 hours of staff time annually, with employees able to focus on other store activities, including customer service.

The installation will cover standard grocery aisles as well as fresh and frozen sections. Larger label formats will be used at traditional service counters, while models designed for low-temperature environments will operate alongside frozen products.

The project combines Hanshow’s electronic pricing technology with HL Display’s Slimline shelf-display infrastructure. Central control is intended to keep shelf information current and reduce discrepancies between displayed prices and those held in Alcampo’s systems.
