Abu Dhabi Sphere Construction Enters Active Delivery Phase

Construction on the second Sphere venue, this one in Abu Dhabi, has moved from site preparation into active build, according to Alec Holdings CEO Barry Lewis speaking to Gulf Business. For an industry that has watched the Las Vegas Sphere become the reference point for large-format immersive LED, this is the clearest signal yet that a second, comparably ambitious venue is actually coming out of the ground.
Alec was awarded the construction contract by Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism in May. Lewis says groundwork and piling are underway, permit applications have been submitted, and Atkins has joined as lead designer. Major procurement packages, including structural steel and technology partners, are complete, though the announcement does not name which technology suppliers are involved.
The venue carries a construction cost of AED6.4 billion (roughly US$1.74 billion) and is scheduled for completion in 2029, six years after the Las Vegas original opened in 2023. At roughly 150 meters in diameter, it will follow the same basic architecture: an inner envelope housing the amphitheater and immersive display, and an outer Exosphere made up of individually controllable LED elements for the building's exterior.
The display tolerance problem
The interior screen is specified at 933 facets and 62,872 individually calibrated tiles, built to produce a continuous 180-degree image. Lewis told Gulf Business that even a small installation deviation could create a visible seam or distortion, which is a familiar headache for anyone who has commissioned large curved LED but rarely at this scale. According to Lewis, the steel structure and display panels are being installed under controlled temperature and dust conditions, since a temperature swing of just four or five degrees can push tolerances out of spec.
That level of environmental control during install is worth noting for integrators working on any large-format curved or seamless display: it underlines how much of the finished visual quality is decided during construction rather than at the media-player or content stage.
Not a copy-paste of Las Vegas
Alec says it cannot simply replicate the Las Vegas build methodology. Abu Dhabi's climate, building codes, power infrastructure, logistics and supplier base all differ, meaning design, procurement and construction have to run in parallel with limited room for late changes once the installation sequence is locked in.
For the digital signage and DOOH industry, the project remains a proof point that venue-scale immersive LED has moved from novelty to a repeatable, if still extremely complex, building category. What the announcement does not cover is display resolution, pixel pitch, refresh rate or which LED manufacturer will supply the tiles.

Alec received the construction contract from the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi in May. The approximately 150-meter-diameter (492 feet) venue is scheduled for completion in 2029 and will become the second Sphere after the original opened in Las Vegas in 2023.
Like its Las Vegas counterpart, the Abu Dhabi venue will have two distinct structures. The internal envelope will contain the amphitheater and immersive display, while the outer Exosphere will incorporate individually controllable LED elements.
