Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air or Not Turning On?
In Illinois, you pray for cold air, but not in the winter and especially not from your heating system! Below are a few things to check before calling in the professionals at Tiger Services, LLC:
1. Set your thermostat to “Auto”
If it’s set to ON, it means that the blower is running even when the furnace itself isn’t heating air.
Also, check the location of your thermostat. It regulates the temperature of the house from where it’s located. If next to a space heater or oven that’s on, expect cold air.
2. Make sure your air filters are clean
A dirty air filter prevents air from properly flowing. If cold air can’t reach the furnace, it will overheat, blow cold air, then no air at all. Another culprit may be leaky ductwork – if cold air sneaks into your ducts, it must be thrown out via registers before your system can heat the air.
3. Check your pilot light
Finally, if your furnace is not turning on or blowing cold air it could be your pilot light is out. If these don’t solve the problem, It also may be the time to call the heating experts at Tiger Services, LLC today. And remember, proper maintenance every year will help prevent these annoying issues all winter long.
What’s The Difference Between Boilers, Radiators & Furnaces?
Understanding Your System is Important
Understanding your system can help you troubleshoot issues before they happen. In a sentence, boilers heat water and send it through radiators in the house while furnaces heat air and force it through the house via ducts and out the vents.
Boilers & Radiators
One of the most common types is Forced Hot Water “FHW” boilers. FHW boilers heat water and send it through hydronic piping loops to baseboard radiators – which heats the space. Radiators act as the delivery mechanism of the hot water and as the name suggests, ‘radiate’ heat to warm up the room.
Furnaces
Most modern homes use Forced Hot Air “FHA” Systems for heating. An FHA furnace has burners that are controlled by a thermostat. When turned on, the unit pulls air through it, heating it up and pushing it through the ducts and out the vents throughout the home. You can save on energy costs by simply closing vents in parts of your house where you don’t spend much time in during the winter. Make sure you keep heat in areas with piping to avoid frozen pipes.
