Don’t Let a Clogged Drain Ruin Your Holidays

“FOG” is plumbing industry shorthand for “fats, oil & grease.” While FOG provides plumbing companies with a lot of business over the winter holidays, clogged drains due to fat, oil, and grease are something that can be easily prevented.

Keep the following tips in mind when celebrating this holiday season.

Never pour fats, oils, or grease down a sink drain, toilet, or tub.

Take care not to dispose of meats and other greasy foods down the drain. Instead, place them in a garbage bag or sealed container and throw them in the trash. Even small amounts of fat, oil, or grease can create huge issues with your drain lines, so be sure to wipe off greasy dishes and pots with a paper towel to absorb any grease before washing.

Be selective in pouring table scraps into your disposal.

Garbage disposals are convenient for disposing of small table scraps, but certain foods can present a challenge and lead to clogged drains. Stringy and fibrous foods, like celery stalks and potato peels, should always be thrown in the trash to prevent damage to your garbage disposal or drain line blockages.

Drain baskets and strainers are also useful tools for catching smaller food items rinsed from plates and utensils.

Remember what can and cannot be flushed down the toilet

Ask any plumber and they will tell you that people often flush things down the toilet that should not be flushed. Items such as wet wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, floss, and cotton swabs can wreak havoc on your drain lines. In the event that one of these items is flushed, keep a plunger next to the toilet just in case.
