[SPRING][NO PICS]5 Things You Can Do For National Earth Day

At the height of the industrial age, we were oblivious to what our actions did to the environment. Pollution, acid rain, unchecked destruction of forests and threats to wildlife went on while we celebrated our progress.

That all changed in 1970 with the first nationally organized Earth Day. Done to raise awareness of rampant environmental destruction, this movement led to the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and several environmental protection acts.

Here are some ways you can help the environment for Earth Day on April 22nd: 

Help Forests
Plant a tree, at home or as part of a larger project in your neighborhood or region. Forests are the lifeblood of our planet but they’ve been destroyed in many places. Trees provide homes for animals, cleanse the air and give us (and animals) food.

Switch to paper made from recycled materials and sustainable forest sources. An easy way to tell is to look for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified logo. This council is a non-governmental body that works to ensure that paper is made from responsible sources using sustainable practices. 

Help Endangered Wildlife 
Donate to a fund that works towards saving animals at risk of extinction and raise awareness among family and friends. There are many organizations that work tirelessly to raise awareness, protect habitats and implement laws to protect animals from being over-hunted.

Reduce Water Pollution
Watch what you put down the drains. Your home might be spotless from the harsh chemicals you used to clean it, but those harsh chemicals end up in rivers, lakes and seas. Once there, many of these chemicals kill fish, destroy ecosystems and get into our water supply. 

Switch to environmentally friendly products at home (enzyme-based cleaners work as well as chemicals) and you’ll be keeping the earth and your family safe.

Reduce Waste 
Many regions already have recycling programs. The next step is to reduce the amount of waste you produce that isn’t recyclable. For Earth Day, do craft with your children using non-recyclable items that would normally end up in the landfill. 

Save Energy
Your home also has an impact on the environment. Lower your energy consumption with the right maintenance on your HVAC and Plumbing equipment, replacing if necessary. Not only will the earth thank you, but your bank account will too!
