Happy World Plumbing Day! Commit to Using Less Water

tap waterWorld Plumbing Day is upon us and while clean water might seem like an abundant resource, it is actually a lot more precious than we might think. In fact, millions of people across the globe do not have access to the clean drinking water and sanitary facilities we take for granted. World Plumbing Day was created by the World Plumbing Council, to highlight and celebrate all of the work that plumbers do to protect people from the dangers of unclean water. However, World Plumbing Day isn’t only for plumbers and you can help us celebrate by doing your part to help protect and preserve our preciously limited water supply!

Did you know that the average person can use 80-100 gallons of water per day and if you multiply that by the 323,407,024 people living in just the U.S., we can begin to see why clean water is becoming a scarce resource.  A little goes a long way! If all of us did our part and used a little less water each day, we could really make a difference. Plus, by using less water, you can save major money on your monthly water bill. And who doesn’t love saving money?

Try a few of these suggestions below and see the difference.world plumbing day

1. Fix leaks right away! Leaks are one of the biggest wastes of fresh water and leaks are a huge expense to homeowners. Having a leak fixed is the best way to save both water and money.

2. You can save up to 7.5 gallons of water each minute if you upgrade your old, inefficient showerhead.

3. Don’t waste water by flushing facial tissue, cigarette butts, trash, floss or other random items down the toilet. You’re wasting around seven gallons of water with each flush and these items can be harmful to your plumbing system.

4. Try knocking a few minutes off of your daily shower. You’re using 20-40 gallons of water for every four minutes you spend in the shower.

5. Turn off the water after you wet your toothbrush. You’ve probably heard this all your life, but it really does make a difference.

6. Use a bucket and a sponge to wash your car, instead of a hose.

7. Try to only run your washing machine and dishwasher with full loads.

8. When clearing leaves and debris from your patio, sidewalk or deck, use a broom instead of a hose.

9. When it comes time to upgrade your appliances, choose energy efficient models. You’ll save water and money in the long run.

10. Instead of letting your kitchen faucet run while doing the dishes, fill the sink with water.
