Why Do My Pipes Vibrate When I Flush the Toilet?

Toilet handleDoes it sound like someone strikes a hammer to your pipes every time that you flush your toilet? This is a problem that occurs in many homes, and it can be both worrisome and annoying for Metro East area homeowners. Today we’re going to talk about why your pipes might vibrate when you flush the toilet and some of the ways that Tiger can help you solve this problem!

Why do my pipes vibrate when I flush the toilet?

There are actually a number of different reasons why your pipes might vibrate loudly every time that your toilet flushes. Some of the most common explanations include:

  • Loose pipes. If any of the pipes that lead to and from your toilet are not securely fastened, they can move around when your toilet flushes. This can create loud noises as the pipes bang against the surrounding wooden frames and walls.
  • High water pressure. When the water pressure in your home is too high, it can force your pipes to vibrate with much more force than they would if you had normal water pressure. This can create vibrating noises even if your pipes are tightly-secured.
  • Fast-closing fill valve. After your toilet is flushed, its tank is refilled with water. When the fill valve in your toilet tank detects that enough water has been supplied, it closes and stops any more water from passing through. Some toilets have a fast-closing fill valve, which stops the flow of water very quickly and creates a shock effect that can make your pipes vibrate.

What can I do to stop my pipes from vibrating when I flush the toilet?

Because many of the fixes for vibrating pipes require access to your plumbing system and/or the installation of new parts, it’s best to have this problem handled by a professional plumbing company like Tiger. After inspecting your toilet, we can perform a number of different repairs, including:

  • Tightly securing all of the pipes leading to and from your toilet.
  • Measuring your home’s water pressure and installing a pressure reducing valve if needed.
  • Installing a slower shutoff valve or shock arrestor in your toilet.
