When to Replace Your Furnace: 5 Questions to Ask

The beginning of the heating season is often the time of year that many homeowners consider whether or not to replace their furnace. Although we want our furnace to last as long as possible, there inevitably comes a time that heating systems begin to decline in performance and it would be best to install a new, more efficient system. If you’re trying to decide when to replace your furnace, answering the five questions below will make your decision much easier!

When to replace your furnace: 5 questions to ask

  1. How old is my furnace? On average, a well-maintained furnace is expected to last about 15 years. If your furnace is nearing that age, you should start to consider replacing it with a new system. This is especially true when you consider how efficient today’s furnaces are and the amount of money you’ll save on your utility bills by installing a new and more efficient unit.
  2. How well has my furnace been maintained? The maintenance history of your furnace will have a direct impact on how long it lasts. If your furnace has not had a tune-up every year or if you have not kept up with your air filter changes, you will need to replace your system much sooner than you would with a well-maintained furnace. If you’re having problems with an aging furnace that has not been well-maintained, it’s probably best to replace it. Think of this as your opportunity to start with a clean slate!
  3. Is it worth it to pay for repairs? Some furnace repairs are simple and relatively inexpensive, while others are more complicated and can cost a significant amount of money. If you have an older and inefficient furnace, often times it’s best to put the money that you’d otherwise spend on an expensive repair toward the cost of a new system. This is especially true if your furnace has multiple problems that require frequent repairs.
  4. Have my energy bills been rising? Take a look at your heating bills over the past few years. Does it seem like those bills have been going up? Furnaces begin to lose efficiency as they get older, which can significantly raise your heating costs. Instead of paying for higher utility bills, you can install a new furnace and begin saving money right away!
  5. What’s the efficiency rating of my furnace? Some people who have furnaces with low-efficiency ratings might not even realize that they could be paying much less for their heating bills. Whereas today’s high-efficiency systems have an AFUE rating of 90% or above, older furnaces can have AFUE ratings as low as 60% or lower. By replacing an inefficient furnace with a new and more efficient model, you could save hundreds of dollars a year!
