Kitchen Sink Clogged in your Glen Carbon Area Home? Check out these Do’s and Don’ts
We use our kitchen sinks every day for everything from cooking, to washing our hands, to filling up a glass of water. So if water begins to build up in your kitchen sink due to a clog, you’ll want to take care of the problem right away. Today we’re going to talk about why kitchen sinks get clogged and the do’s and don’ts of fixing a clogged kitchen sink!
Why do kitchen sinks get clogged?
A kitchen sink is one of the most common sites of drain clogs in Glen Carbon area homes. That’s largely due to the amount of scraps that go down that drain on a daily basis. Although small food particles typically go down your kitchen sink without problems, larger pieces can get stuck in your drain and begin to build up.
In addition to food particles, things like grease and coffee grounds can be particularly problematic to kitchen sinks. These types of things can get stuck easily in your drain and trap other food particles that come in contact with them.
What you should do if your kitchen sink is clogged
If your kitchen sink is clogged, you can try to use a plunger to clear it up. Small plungers are available at hardware stores that are designed to be used on sinks the same way that you would plunge a toilet. If you have a double-bowl sink in your kitchen, be sure to cover the second sink with a wet rag while you’re trying to break the clog. Note: if your sink has a garbage disposal, check out our post about garbage disposal clogs.
If you cannot seem to unclog your kitchen sink with a plunger, there’s a good chance that you either have a severe clog or that the clog is much further down the drain. In either case, your best bet is to contact Tiger Services so we can use our tools and expertise to take care of the clog for you.
What you should NOT do if your kitchen sink is clogged
- Do not remove any parts. If you have a clog that requires the removal of any parts of your kitchen sink, it would be best handled by a professional plumber like one of us at Tiger. You never know what can go wrong with dismantling or putting back together one of your plumbing fixtures, and if something goes wrong you might end up doing more harm than good.
- Do not use chemical drain cleaners. Although it might be tempting to use a store-bought drain cleaner on your kitchen sink clog, many of these products are corrosive and can do damage to your pipes.
If you have any questions about what to do when your kitchen sink is clogged, or if you’d like a plumbing system serviced or installed in your home, contact Tiger Services, your Glen Carbon, IL, plumbing, heating and air conditioning company.
